The greatest Love
If your child asked you the question, “Mommy, what is love?” What would you say? For me, there is only one way to answer that: God. Is. love. (1 John 4:8) Unfortunately, nowadays, love has become this unrealistic “fantasy love” where sex, lust and desire are at the root of the relationship. Thanks a lot Hollywood!
Love has become one of the most overused words on the planet.
“I love Pizza!” Or “I love this car.”
“I love that outfit.” Or “I love this TV show!”
The true magnitude and astounding power of what love truly is, has almost been lost or taken away. How amazing would it be to live a life where you aren't ruled by emotions: vengeance, envy, lust, strife, fear and hate? Imagine instead being ruled by God’s love, how God intended it to be. It is to our advantage to walk in love!
Love is the strongest force on the planet! The most powerful tool God Himself, gave us is love. Think about it, it takes faith to believe that the way of love will not fail. By practicing love-by-faith, you are dying to yourself and refusing to seek your own fleshly desires. You are saying, “God I trust You, and You're fighting on my behalf.” We literally have an upper hand. Likewise, when you choose sin you are saying, “God, I don't trust You and what You say.” Therefore, giving Satan the upper hand.
If God is love, which He is, then the love in our relationships should reflect the love God has for us: Never ending, ever more forgiving, and unconditional.
Love bears all things [regardless of what comes], believes all things [looking for the best in each one], hopes all things [remaining steadfast during difficult times], endures all things [without weakening]. LOVE NEVER FAILS [it never fades nor ends]. (1 Corinthians 13:7-8 Amplified)
Love NEVER fails! It's like having a super power; you are now dealing with circumstances in an entirely different realm. You are functioning in faith and not in the flesh. If we truly understood the enormity of this Agape love, and its power...I seriously doubt anyone reading this would ever react out of their emotions again. Instead we’d be competing to see who could love more!
In Psalms 91, in what is one of the most powerful chapters in the Bible, demons tremble at the sound of these words: 1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty 2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” 3 Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be our shield and rampart. 5 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. 7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. 8 You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked. 9 If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, 10 no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. 11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; 12 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread on the lion and cobra; you will trample the great lion and serpent. 14 “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. 15 He will call on me and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. 16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.
Notice what it says in verse 14? “Because he loves me,” says the Lord. Notice all the amazing things God says He will do for you BECAUSE YOU LOVE HIM. Wow! That is all God wants! That's it!
Jesus Himself, said it best in Matthew 22:37-39; “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
And He proved it, in what is the most loving act ever! He died on a cross on our behalf, beaten, and bruised on our behalf. It tells us in John 3:16, "For God SO LOVED the world, that He gave His only begotten son." And John 15:13 "No one shows greater love than when he lays down his life for his friends."
Jesus did that for us purely because He so loves us. I know that it's easy to forget the vastness of what God did for us. But let's personalize it, ask yourself, would you give up your child/husband/parent to save another from their sin? Probably not, and that’s ok... No judgment here. But God did! He gave up His only Son to die for our sins! God could have said, “I can't watch My only Son suffer like that!” And Jesus could have very easily said “This is too much to bear.” But instead, while they were beating Him and mocking Him and spitting in His face, Jesus still chose to die for us. And God endured the worse, agonizing, pain along with Him by allowing it.
But THAT is what love is.
God’s love is never-ending; it never departs from us, and it's always available to us because when God sees us, He sees Jesus!
Love is a choice, a way of life, a compromise, sometimes it's a sacrifice, it's not always easy, BUT it's always the most powerful tool God gave you! When you choose to love unconditionally, change follows, every time!
When you married your spouse, I can guarantee you, you had no idea how hard it would be to “love” him. Whether your spouse is Christian or not, it's hard! However, do you know what the reason for that is? I'm pretty sure you're not going to like it, but I'll tell you anyway... You are more fleshly/sinful than you think you are. Let's face it, you want it your way. You have yet to grasp the depths of your own sin. You can justify it, and give yourself the benefit of the doubt... “Oh, but his faults are more offensive than mine,” or, “I bring more to the table,” and of course, “He’s the problem!”
Regardless, whatever the reason may be, I know that you are with that person for a reason. God knew what He was doing when He brought you two together. He knew that those flaws, that stubbornness, that self-righteous attitude was just the thing in your character that your husband could sharpen. He knew that your spouse would be perfect at exposing that sin you try so hard to cover and hide. It's perfect really. When I think about it, it's ingenious. Iron sharpens iron, and you two are stronger together. That is why God gave us this super-power. Because it takes us using our faith, dying to our flesh and trusting God that, if we choose love, it will overcome. And guess what? It does. Every time. Whenever it gets hard, ugly and just plain messy…just remember the love Jesus showed you on the cross. Love is sometimes a sacrifice. Choose love and I promise you God will do the rest.
